The man attempted to rescue the boy and his mother once he realized they were in the burning house.
This man, Effon Wilson, explained the series of events and his attempt to be the hero.
“I was knocking on the door as hard as I could. I didn’t get an answer, so I decided to kick in the door… Smoke hit me in my face. I tried to go upstairs to get her son, but I couldn’t,” Wilson.
Once Wilson was unsuccessful, he called 911.
Firefighters saw the boy, who had got himself out on his own, standing on the steps outside of the house. They then went in and rescued the mother.
Both the boy and his mother were taken to the hospital, where they are being treated for smoke inhalation.
