Cardinals slug past Pirates

Thanks to 3 late home runs and 5 overall, the Cardinals picked up another victory over the Pirates, winning 9-7.

St. Louis was trailing by a run and down to their last out when pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter hit a home run to tie the game at 6. Randal Grichuk and Jhonny Peralta added 2 more homers in the Cardinals 4 run top of the 9th. Yadier Molina and Matt Adams also hit homer runs earlier in the game.

Pittsburgh’s Jung Ho Kang, who went 3 for 5 with 2 home runs, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored in the game, would follow with a solo shot of his own, but it wasn’t enough.

Andrew McCutchen went 1 for 5 with 3 strike outs. The former National League MVP has a pedestrian .252 average this season.

Mike Myers earned the win in relief while Tony Watson gets credited with the loss and only 5th blown save of the year.

After losing the first 2 games of this 3 game series, the Pirates have fallen 5.5 games out of the last NL Wild Card spot and 21 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.

Pittsburgh looks to avoid the sweep tonight in the last meeting with St. Louis until the final series of the season. First pitch from PNC Park is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
