Cubs outlast Pirates in extras

The Cubs outlast the Pirates to win 8-7 in extra innings last night.

Despite chasing Cub ace Jake Arrieta for 6 earned runs through 6.1 innings, Chicago was able to force their way to extra innings with 2 runs in the 8th and 1 in the 9th.

In extras, both teams had their chances, including a miraculous play at the plate by Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli preventing a Cubs winning run in the 10th.

Josh Harrison’s sacrifice fly gave Pittsburgh a 7-6 lead in the top of the 13th inning. The Pirates momentum wouldn’t last long.

Anthony Rizzo singled home the tying run while Miguel Montero became the hero of the night with a pinch hit game winning single to send Kris Bryant home.

Rob Zastryzny earned the win in relief for the Cubs and Jeff Locke was the losing pitcher for the Pirates.

Game 2 of this 3 game series is tonight from Wrigley Field in Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EST.

Chicago now holds a 14 game lead over the Cardinals and a 15.5 game lead over Pittsburgh in the National League Central.
