Drug-detecting dog dies after being left in hot car

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is investigating the recent death of a drug dog that was left in a hot car in Benner Township.

A two-year-old yellow lab named Totti was left in a hot vehicle for two and a half hours during a training exercise at the state prison at Rockview, reports WTAE.

A spokesperson said the dog’s handler had stored training items in a vehicle at the end of the exercise and didn’t realize that the dog was locked in the car.

Officials said the handler and others started emergency care and rushed Totti to the vet, where he was pronounced dead.

The director of the unit has met with all handlers to review the care and handling of dogs, and is looking into new technology to prevent another tragedy.
