Family, UPMC reach settlement in mold death

The family of a transplant patient who died of a mold infection has settled with UPMC for $1.35 million. Shelby Slagel, 27, had a heart transplant at UPMC Presby and was one of several patients who passed after contracting a mold infection. The Tribune-Review reports Slagel, of Groveport, Ohio, died on June 26, 2015.

The family of Tracy Fischer, 47, of Erie, also settled with UPMC for $1.35 million. She died October 1, 2014 of a fungal infection.

UPMC suspended its transplant program for six days in September of 2015 after identifying mold in other patients.

WPXI reports the CDC says a special ventilated room in the hospital’s ICU may have been where the mold originated.
