Flames burn through Penn Hills home

The American Red Cross was called out to help a Penn Hills family Saturday after a fire leaves a home badly damaged.

The fire happened around 3:45 p.m. on the 8900 block of Frankstown Road.

WPXI reports that several fire departments responded to battle the flames.  Heavy flames and smoke made the house difficult to see when firefighters arrived.

A mother and three children escaped from the fire.  Firefighters said one child was taken to a hospital for minor smoke inhalation.

The road was closed as crews battled the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The family who lives in the home told WPXI a hot water tank just exploded before the fire.
