Stolen laptops contained personal information of Pennsylvania taxpayers. The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue is in the process of mailing letters to 865 taxpayers that their personal information and records were not properly secured on laptops prior to its theft.
Department auditors were victims of theft when in San Francisco in late June. Thieves smashed the windows of their rental car and stole the laptops.
Law enforcement was immediately notified of the incident when it occurred.
While four laptops in total were stolen, it is believed only one laptop contains information that was not secure.
The department said that it is offering victims free credit monitoring services and fraud protections until this matter is resolved.
