Cubs manager Joe Maddon spoke about Hendricks’ performance.
“He has to be in Cy Young contention,” Maddon said. “Put the radar gun in your back pocket and look at what he’s doing. There has to be strong consideration, not just consideration.”
Hendricks had a no-hitter going until allowing a bloop single off the bat of Pirates Gregory Polanco. This marked the 18th straight start Hendricks has given up 3 or fewer runs. His ERA is now a major league leading 2.09.

Chad Kuhl was the losing pitcher for Pittsburgh. Kuhl has now lost 2 of his last 3 starts with a no decision in a Pirates win coming at Milwaukee on August 25.
Aroldis Chaman, who the Cubs acquired from the Yankees at the MLB Trade Deadline, earned his 11th National League save of the season and 31st overall.
The Pirates have now lost the first 2 games of this series, including a 13 inning classic Monday night.
Now sitting 16.5 games behind Chicago in the National League Central, the Pirates close the series tonight. The game is televised nationally on ESPN from Wrigley Field at 8 p.m. EST.
