Police: Man attempted to flush infant down the toilet

A man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to flush an infant down a toilet during a standoff early Tuesday morning in Mt. Washington.

The incident began at 12:30 a.m. when police and SWAT were called to the 100 block of Southern Avenue.  Police say they were dispatched for a domestic in which a male pulled a gun.

Dennis Gateley, 31, reportedly attempted to flush the 6-week-old infant down a toilet.

A woman in the home was able to evacuate the home along with the infant.  They were taken Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC so that the infant could be evaluated.

Gateley refused to come out of the house for about two hours, but eventually surrendered to police around 2:30 a.m.  He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

A spokesperson for the family told WPXI that the baby has been released from the hospital and is back home.

Gateley was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, persons not to possess a firearm, terrorist threats, and endangering the welfare of a child.
