Several taken to hospital, one dead after crash on Route 51

A car crash send several people to the hospital and shuts down both lanes of traffic on a portion of Route 51 Sunday evening.

The crash involving five vehicles happened around 6:30 p.m.

According to a witness, a silver car was driving at a high speed and crossed the median, colliding with oncoming traffic.

Four people were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Police say the driver of the silver car has been identified as a male, he had his arm severed in the wreck. A female passenger, who was also in the car, did not survive.

According to WTAE, Maria Luevano, 40, of Willard, Ohio, died at Allegheny General Hospital. She reportedly died of blunt force injuries.

The portion of Route 51 near Woodruff Street will remain closed until further notice.

The accident is under investigation.
