The University of Pittsburgh faces off against Villanova in this season’s opener.
The football game beings at 1:30p.m. at Heinz Field today, Saturday, September 3, 2016.
Pat Narduzzi, is kicking off his second season as Pitt’s head coach. Last year, he led the Panther’s to a season record of 8-5 and coached the team to end the season with a runner-up spot in the ACC’s Coastal Division.
Villanova’s coach, Andy Talley, that led the Wildcats to a 2009 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national title, has announced that he will be retiring in 2017, after 32 seasons.
Villanova football reports that “Senior defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon earned STATS FCS Preseason All-America honors and headlines four returning players on defense who were CAA Football All-Conference performers last season.”
Pitt’s star running back, James Conner, will be returning to the field after experiencing and overcoming some serious setbacks.

In 2014, Conner, first team All-American, missed most of last season due to a knee-injury, then only 3 months after the injury, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Miraculously, Conner was declared cancer free in May, returned to training camp, and appropriately appointed as team captain.
Pitt Offensive Lineman, Adam Bisnowaty and Dorian Johnson, All-ACC performers in tackle and guard, will be starting today.
Saturday’s game will be the third all-time football face off between Pitt and Villanova. Their first meeting in 1911, and their last, in 1998. Pitt leads Villanova 2-0 in overall match ups between the two teams.
James Conner said that “Nothing is Guaranteed,” regarding his cancer survival, and those words translate on to the football field.
Although the Panthers lead the Wildcats 2-0, winning today’s game is not guaranteed. The players trained all summer, and we will see if it pays off on the football field.
